Athletes from around the world are in Israel, ready to compete in the first-ever Jerusalem International Marathon on March 25.
It’s a race that offers unique views: Jerusalem’s iconic skyline, the Knesset, the Old City’s historic walls, Sultan’s Pool, Mount Zion and the Mount of Olives.
“We look forward to welcoming athletes from around the world to participate in this one-of-a-kind fitness competition,” says Haim Gutin, Israel commissioner for tourism, North and South America. “The race will provide unprecedented views of one of the world’s most historically rich and beautiful cities.”
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat confirmed that the event will go on as planned despite the terrorist attack on March 23 in the capital.
“We had a difficult day – murderous terror [took place] in the heart of Jerusalem. Our final reply to the terrorist murderers – we will not stop running. Jerusalem does not stop, and will not stop,” Barkat said.
Runners can choose from five courses including a full and half marathon, 10K and 4.2K races along with a charity 400-meter dash. Some 10,000 racers are expected to take part in the Jerusalem Marathon.
In related news, the annual Tel Aviv Marathon will take place on April 8. The route takes runners through the White City, past beaches, parks and Bauhaus architecture.
There are six routes to choose from: the 10 percent race (4.2 km); the Urban race (10km); the half marathon (21.1 km) and the full marathon (42.2 km). Plus, there’s a roller blade route and a hand-cycle race.
Some 11,000 participants have already signed up for what has been dubbed the “biggest sporting event in Israel.”
