Leket Israel App makes donating easy

Leket Israel‘s new Iphone and Android applications makes donating food to the needy super easy by letting the user know where the closest food agency is located. The food rescue network is the first nonprofit in Israel to design such an App.
“The Leket Israel App will allow both Israelis and tourists visiting Israel easy access to finding the closest location in need of the surplus food from [an] event,” says Joseph Gitler, Founder and Chairman of Leket Israel. “We are very excited to have created the first of its kind in Israel and to use technology to better serve those less fortunate.”
Leket Israel serves as the country’s National Food Bank and works to alleviate the problem of nutritional insecurity among the growing numbers of Israel’s poor. Each year, with the help of 40,000 volunteers, Leket Israel rescues over 700,000 meals and 21 million pounds of produce and perishable goods. Food, that would have otherwise gone to waste, is redistributed to nearly 300 nonprofit partners caring for the needy.
“We are very proud of our mealtime rescue project and in 2011, through the assistance of hundreds of volunteers, we collected 700,000 fresh meals that would have otherwise been thrown away,” says Gitler.
