Alice Schlesinger is set to face Slovenian judoka Urska Zolnir in the quarterfinals U63-kg. later today, after defeating Austria’s Hilde Drexler. Schlesinger beat Drexler in the Elimination Round of 16 with a yuko.
At the end of the match, Schlesinger mouthed ‘sorry’ to Drexler in a show of friendship – the two train together throughout the year and are friends.
Later today (July 31), Schlesinger will face Zolnir, considered to be a tough opponent. The two have met before in other international competitions and each holds victories over the other.
Other Israelis in action today include windsurfers Shahar Zubari and Lee Korzits, sailor Nufar Edelman and tennis doubles Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich.
Korzits, a two-time defending world champion, is to begin the women’s windsurfing competition today. The contest includes 10 races and continues through August 7.
Zubari is hoping to better his bronze medal from the Beijing Olympics at this year’s London Games.
Sailor Edelman has her eyes set on a better day today as she sets out to compete in races three and four in the women’s Laser Radial. She is currently ranked 35 out of 41 sailors.
Tennis Olympians Ram and Erlich have a tough second round match scheduled for later this evening as they go up against Switzerland’s top player Roger Federer and his doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka.
