Israeli high school students won five medals — one gold and four bronze — at this year’s International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Amsterdam.

The medal haul pushed Israel up 30 spots in the global ranking to the 23rd place out of 101 countries. It was Israel’s best achievement in the past seven years.

Education Minister Gideon Sa’ar congratulated the team.

“You represent Israel respectfully and reached impressive achievements,” Sa’ar was quoted in the Hebrew media. “Israel’s accomplishments in future Olympiads will only grow in light of the change in perception in terms of the preparations and the prominence given to reaching achievements, especially in science.”

The IMO is the world championship mathematics competition for high school students.

Since participating in the Olympiad, Israel has won 11 gold medals, 33 silver medals and 81 bronze medals.
